After losing his father at the age of 10, Derek was forced to grapple with difficult questions about death, dying, faith, and the afterlife. As an adult, these concepts have shaped the foundation of his interests; namely, the desire to investigate the paranormal and seek out experiences that validate the possibility of an afterlife.

He believes in the possibility that consciousness can exist apart from the physical body, but with no conclusive evidence available and without having had inexplicable experiences, he is unable to affirm a belief in ghosts. It is with this skepticism and openness that he approaches his paranormal investigations.
